Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the courses for?
Students in grades 6–12, plus curious adults. The YouTube course is written so a motivated middle schooler can follow it. We’ve found that also makes it the clearest version for everyone else.
Does my child need any math or coding background?
No. Project 1 starts from zero: if your child can use a web browser, they can start. Concepts build gradually and resurface on purpose.
Are the lessons free?
Every lesson video is free on YouTube. On our practice site, Learn With Projects, the first lesson of every project needs no account, and the rest of Project 1, Sibling Interviews, is free with a free account. The classroom kit that grows alongside each project (lesson plans, quizzes, printables, answer guides) is a benefit for our Patreon community.
What tools do we need to buy?
Nothing. Everything runs on free, industry-standard tools: Google Sheets, Google Colab, Looker Studio, and R. A laptop or Chromebook with a browser is enough.
How does student privacy work?
The lessons are YouTube videos, and watching them needs no account with us. On our practice site, students in a class join with their teacher’s code and a nickname, with no email or account of their own. Accounts are only for adults and learners 13 or older. What we store lists it exactly. If you have specific concerns, ask us through the contact form.
I’m a teacher or homeschool parent. Can I use your materials for my class?
Please do! The lesson videos, and every dataset you need to follow them, are free to use in any classroom. Our Teachers & Homeschoolers page explains how the pieces fit together. The classroom kit (lesson plans, quizzes, printables) comes with Patreon membership.
Can I support the project?
Yes, and thank you. See our Support page. You can join our Patreon or share a lesson with a teacher or student.
